Despite what locals say, it was actually no uglier than similar tall buildings erected in the 1970s. The problem was the build quality. Remember this was the era just before workplace health & well-being awareness. It was reportedly hot in the summer & draughty in the winter & was later diagnosed with 'sick building syndrome'. Unity house would still be standing now if it had been built to higher standards. At the time of it's opening, a building of this height was unprecedented in Staffordshire.

morgan the roundabouts (merrygoround in usa) organ ( ivor the engine reference ) lovely steam engine .:) many of these early engine plants were very ornate to the point that tours were given. the victorians wanted to show off the latest.

The boiler feed conversion is (was) probably one which blew fine coal dust into the boilers, doing away with all the stokers and their shovels. Get on the phone to the union!!
